Driver suffers life-threatening injuries after A1 crash in Northumberland

A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after a crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway at Stannington on Monday afternoon following reports that a car had left the road.

The carriageway was closed as they worked at the scene and the driver was taken to hospital with "potentially life-threatening injuries".

The road remains closed between the Seaton Burn junction and the Fairmoor junction as investigation work is carried out at the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 2.02pm today (Monday) we received a report of a serious collision involving one vehicle on the A1 at Stannington.

“It was reported that a car had been travelling northbound, when, for reasons yet to be established, it has left the carriageway.

“Officers and emergency services are at the scene and the male driver of the vehicle has been taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area to help ease congestion at this time and the northbound carriageway has been closed with local diversions in place at this time.”
