Driver stops in the middle of the motorway to search for directions

A driver came to a standstill at a junction on the M56 to search for directions on their phone.

North West Motorway Police spotted a light blue Kia Picanto stopped at Junction 3 on the M56, near to the A560 on Saturday afternoon (January 29).

The car had stopped on a 'tiger tail' - the chevron markings which split a motorway from an exit or a slip road.

When officers approached the vehicle, the driver told them they had stopped there to use navigation on their phone, reports CheshireLive.

A picture posted on Twitter by North West Motorway Police showed the vehicle stopped below gantry signs advising which direction to follow.

The driver of the vehicle was issued with a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), which is given when an officer has reason to believe that someone has committed a specified road traffic-related offence.

The caption accompanying the image read: "Driver stopped on tiger's tail to use navigation on phone - not reading motorway gantry signs above her - TOR issued."

The incident took place on the same day that changes to the Highway Code came into effect.

From January 29, new guidance was issued on a range of motoring codes, including how motorists are advised to open the door of a vehicle.

The Dutch Reach technique is now advised, which asks drivers, where able to do so, to open the door using their hand on the opposite side to the door that they are opening.

This technique means that people will turn their head and will be able to look over their shoulder behind them, making them less likely to cause injury to people cycling and other road users.
