Driver stops in middle of M62 after running out of petrol causing lorry crash

A driver stopped in the middle of the busy M62 after running out of petrol causing a two-lorry crash.

Traffic camera footage shows Gerrard Newell's Ford S Max slow down and then suddenly stop on the motorway near the Eccles Interchange.

It caused a collision between two lorries behind him, the video shows.

Newell sat in his car in the middle lane of a five-lane stretch of the motorway for around a minute, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Other vehicles were forced to swerve to avoid him.

As two HGVs approach, although the front vehicle's driver managed to break, the second was close behind and crashed into him.

Newell, 49, from Formby was convicted of careless and inconsiderate driving.

He was fined £2,000 and given six points on his licence at Manchester Magistrates' Court earlier this month.

The driver of the rear HGV, who police said was driving too close to the vehicle in front meaning he was unable to stop in time, was offered and completed a driver awareness course for driving without due care.
