Driver stopped for speeding tells police officer 'well it is allowed in Germany'

A driver stopped by motorway police for reaching excess speeds told an officer "it is allowed in Germany".

The driver was issued with a Transport Offence Report (TOR) for speeding at 90mph on the M56 in Warrington, but had an unusual reason for justifying the high speed.

The driver advised the officer it was okay to drive at that speed on the Autobahn in Germany.

The Autobahn is the federal controlled-access highway system in Germany, with German autobahnen being widely known for having no federally mandated speed limit.

But speed limits are mandated and in full force across the UK.

The speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways in the UK is 70mph.

North West Motorway Police took to Twitter to detail the incident, leading social media users stunned at the driver's reasoning for speeding.

Olly said: "But we're not in Germany..."

Beverley said: "Oh. Right. [laughing emojis]".

Lee commented: "Well he is correct, however Warrington is not in Germany."

Another social media user added: "How much of a temptation was it [to] tell them "go to Germany then"? Keep up the great work and informative tweets about different countries driving regulations."
