Driver stopped during 200-mile trip from Edinburgh to Wigan to 'buy a puppy'... and again 10 minutes later

A driver has been fined after twice ignoring lockdown rules and attempting to journey from Edinburgh to Wigan to 'buy a puppy'.

They were stopped during their 200-mile trip on the M6 near junction 36 for Crooklands yesterday afternoon (Saturday).

After being fined by Cumbria Police, the driver was caught attempting to complete the same journey - 10 minutes later.

They were fined for a second time and had to be escorted back in the direction they came from.

Officers were so frustrated by the repeat offender that they took to Twitter to warn other drivers against making non-essential journeys.

A spokesman for Cumbria Roads Police said: "Driver stopped at Junction 36 travelling from Edinburgh to Wigan to buy a puppy!

"The driver was issued a fine, however ten minutes later they ignored the instruction to return back home and were issued a second fine before being escorted back up north."

While Boris Johnson announced plans to ease some of the coronavirus lockdown rules yesterday, people are still being asked not to make unnecessary journeys.

From Wednesday, people will be able to travel to other destinations for leisure time outdoors although it has not been specified exactly how far these journeys can be.
