Driver stopped by police after being seen travelling with his sat nav blocking his view out of the windscreen

Police have issued safety advice after a driver's sat nav was blocking the view through his windscreen.

Officers stopped the motorist on a motorway when they spotted the device was stuck right in front of the steering wheel.

The driver was pulled over to the hard shoulder and given a safety talk, reported Devon Live.

Greater Manchester Police Traffic tweeted: “This vehicle was stopped and driver given advice regarding the placement of his Sat Nav.

“This was clearly obstructing his view and directly in his line of sight.

“You must have a full clear view of the road and traffic ahead, obstructing this is an offence. #drivesafe”

Hanging an air freshener on your rear-view mirror could land you with a £1,000 fine

A police spokesman said: "There were two child passengers in the car which led us to take immediate action.

"The driver having been given advice removed the sat nav to a more appropriate place."

The driver was issued with a traffic offence report (TOR) but managed to continue his journey without a fine or subsequent punishment.

Motorists are warned that is illegal to hold a phone or sat nav while driving or riding a motorcycle.

You must have hands-free access, such as a Bluetooth headset, voice command, a dashboard holder or mat, a windscreen mount and a built-in sat nav.

Gov.uk advice also states that the device must also not block your view of the road ahead.

Motorists could land a fine for being distracted or not having full control of their vehicle as a result of one of these devices.
