Driver stopped after clocking up ridiculous speed on the M56

A driver was stopped by police after being clocked doing 120mph on the M56 late last night.

The car, a blue Vauxhall Vectra, was spotted racing along the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 (Hapsford) and junction 12 (Runcorn).

The driver reduced the speed, but only to 80mph, when entering roadworks where a 'live lane' to monitor the speed limit was in place.

Officers then pulled the car over on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from St Helens, was issued with a Traffic Offence Report (TOR).

Following the incident, North West Motorway Police posted on social media: "Driver spotted at 120 mph, M56 J14 to J12 eastbound.

"Heading into the roadworks where operators are working live lane, slowing down 80mph. Nope, not acceptable at all.

"We don't live in Germany.. This is the UK and therefore the speed limit is 70mph - TOR issued."

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At around 11.15pm on Tuesday 18 August officers stopped a blue Vauxhall Vectra for speeding between junctions 14 and 12 on the M56.
