Driver speeds down emergency lane on motorway - but some claim he's in the right

A motorist was caught illegally speeding on a breakdown lane to overtake traffic - but some have surprisingly defended the driver's behaviour.

A video captured on a car's dashcam shows the commuter speeding along the emergency stopping lane on the far-left shoulder of a two-lane road in New South Wales, Australia.

The footage, which was shared on NSW Central Coast Dashcams' Facebook page, has garnered a mixture of reactions - and some people were quick to support the driver.

The clip posted with the caption: “Since when did the breakdown lane become the overtaking lane?”

Some users claimed many motorists were "hogging" lanes by driving under the speed limit, rather than moving towards the middle lane.

Meanwhile, others justified using the breakdown lane because “people stay in the right-hand lane and won’t move over”.

One online user wrote: “It becomes the overtake lane on most Australia freeways.

“For some reason people keep hogging the right lanes and sit under the speed limit.”

Another man said: “It’s the breakdown lane! It’s also illegal to do that.”

One described driving on the road's middle lane as a "hinderance", saying: "Travelled the F3/M1 25yrs and the amount of cars driving slow in the right hand lane with no vehicle beside in the middle lane is a hindrance."

Another wrote: “Impatience [causes] a distinct lack of sound judgment.

“Roadwork zones are there to protect drivers from changed road conditions, just as much as they are to protect workers on the site.

“Just be patient and you will stand a better chance of survival.”

Under Australia's road rules, it is illegal to drive along the emergency stopping lane.

Motorists who commit this offence can lose up to two demerit points and fined $263 (£147).
