NSW Police officers are looking for the driver of a Holden sedan after he allegedly failed to stop for police before crashing a short time later and fleeing the scene, leaving a 28 year-old woman and two children in the car as it caught on fire.

Police from the Mid North Coast Traffic and Highway Patrol said they observed the car travelling on South Street at South Kempsey above a sign posted 60 kilometres per hour around 11.40pm Friday night.

The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it allegedly sped away. A pursuit was initiated, police said, before the vehicle failed to negotiate a bend near an intersection and left the roadway, colliding with trees.

Police said the male driver then ran from the vehicle through a nearby paddock as the car was engulfed in flames.

Three passengers - a woman aged 28 and two children aged three and four - were trapped and had to be freed from the vehicle by officers, police said.

They were treated by paramedics and taken to Port Macquarie Hospital suffering minor injuries.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with information about the driver or his whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
