These were the dramatic scenes after a car crashed into a Merseyside shop front this afternoon.

The incident happened at the Wine Rack on Weld Road in Birkdale, just after 1pm today (Monday).

One eyewitness told the ECHO : "I was walking back from the village to my house, we were turning the corner when we heard this almighty bang.

"We turned and looked at [the Wine Rack store] and saw a car had gone right into it.

"A lady who was sitting outside the shop looked incredibly shocked."

Fortunately, it is understood, no one was seriously hurt.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "We were called at 1.25pm today, following reports a Peugeot 107 had been in collision with a shopfront in Weld Parade in Southport.

"There are no reports of anyone being seriously injured and the car is in the process of being recovered.

"Enquiries into the collision are ongoing."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arrived at 1.25pm, to find the vehicle on all four wheels, and that the driver had left the car.

Their spokesman said the driver was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The ECHO understands the Wine Rack shop remains open, while its indoor seating area will be closed for a few hours.
