Driver sick of middle-lane hoggers takes drastic action on M6

A driver fed up with people hogging the middle lane on the motorway appears to have taken drastic action.

Bridges over the M6 in Lancashire have been daubed with graffiti aimed at sending a message to drivers below, Lancashire Live reports .

The graffiti, spelled out in yellow paint, is aimed at drivers who stay in the middle lane for longer than necessary.

A passenger spotted the messages while travelling north between Preston and Lancaster this week .

One reads: "Keep left unless overtaking."

Another states: "Why are you a middle lane moron?"

Twitter  user @QuarkMcMalus shared the image on social media, noting it was some "very middle-aged" graffiti.

Rule 264 of the Highway Code states that: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear.

"If you are overtaking a number of slow-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past."

But many may not actually realise it is an offence that comes under careless driving.

In June 2013, new penalties were introduced to help tackle the problem and tailgating, giving police the power to issue fixed penalty notices for careless driving.

The change meant that motorists could be hit with a £100 and three penalty points, in line with other similar non-motoring fixed penalties.
