Driver serving 25-year ban arrested after trying to avoid checkpoint in Dublin

Gardai arrested a disqualified driver who got behind the wheel while serving a 25-year ban.

The motorist was nabbed after they failed to stop at a Covid-19 checkpoint in Terenure in south Dublin.

They drove away at speed but were apprehended a short distance from the checkpoint.

A garda spokesperson said: "DMR South Roads Policing Unit conducting #Covid19Ireland checkpoint in Terenure when driver failed to stop and took off at speed.

"Apprehended a short distance away and found to be serving a 25-year driving ban. Driver arrested and car impounded. Court to follow."

The official Garda Traffic account shared a photo of the car and confirmation that they'd been disqualified.

Meanwhile, in Kildare, another motorist was stopped for using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

When officers in an unmarked patrol car stopped the vehicle, the driver tested positive for cannabis and was arrested.

A garda spokesperson said: "Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN) issued for mobile phone offence, court date to follow for drug driving."
