Driver seriously injured as bin thrown from Co Antrim overpass smashes windscreen

A lorry driver is being treated for serious facial injuries after a bin loaded with rocks was thrown from a Co Antrim overpass.

The large brown household bin smashed windscreen of the lorry he was driving.

The incident happened on the Larne bound A8 dual carriageway around 10.40pm on Friday.

And police in Larne are appealing for any witnesses who saw anyone in or around the Moss Road junction at that time, or anyone who may have dashcam footage.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "This incident involved a brown bin containing a number of rocks being thrown from the overpass at the Moss Road junction.

"It struck the front windscreen of an oncoming lorry. The driver is currently being treated in hospital for very serious facial injuries and the incident also resulted in substantial damage to the vehicle.

"If this had occurred during a busier time there could have been fatal consequences."

A PSNI spokesman said: "A lorry driver had been struck in the face by a rock which had broken through his windscreen as he drove under the Ballyboley overpass towards Larne.

"At this time it is believed that a wheelie bin containing rocks was thrown from the overpass as the lorry passed under it.

"Fortunately the driver, although badly injured was able to bring the lorry safely to a stop at the side of the road following the incident. The driver, aged in his 50s, is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

"An investigation is underway and officers would ask anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area of the overpass or who captured dash-cam footage of the incident to contact them in Larne on 101 quoting reference number 1944 08/01/21. Details can also be reported online using the non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.

"You can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/.
