Driver seen inhaling suspected 'hippy crack' from a balloon while behind the wheel on a busy road

This is the moment a driver was filmed inhaling from a balloon while behind the wheel of a car.

Video footage shows a black car driving along Hyde Road, in Gorton, east Manchester.

When the car pulls up at traffic lights, the footage appears to show both the driver and his passenger inhaling from balloons.

The passenger can then be seen to throw a silver canister out of the car window and onto the pavement.

The motorist who filmed the scene on his dash cam suspects that the balloons may have contained nitrous oxide - also known as ‘laughing gas’ and ‘hippy crack’.

Nitrous oxide is commonly found in pressurised silver metal canisters and can be transferred into balloons and inhaled.

The colourless gas can cause fits of giggles, create feelings of euphoria and in some cases, hallucinations.

It can also cause headaches, dizziness and confusion.

Nitrous oxide is illegal to give away or sell under the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act, but there’s no penalty for possession, unless you’re in prison.

Driving when high is illegal and anyone caught driving under the influence may be fined, receive a driving ban or a prison sentence.

The dash cam footage was filmed on the afternoon of Sunday (September 14).
