Driver said he could 'make van dance' before crashing and killing OAP, jury told

A woman told a jury a man said he could "make a van dance" before they crashed into a house and killed the occupant.

Tracy Bibby said she had been at the Crab Apple pub in Clevedon with new friend Ben Chappell.

She told Bristol Crown Court it was him, not her, who drove from the pub and lost control of the Transit.

It then smashed into 90-year-old Joan Woodier's home and caused her fatal injuries, the court heard.

Banned driver Bibby has admitted driving the van to get cash from an ATM.

But she claims she was not behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

Banned driver says she was not behind wheel when van crashed into home, killing OAP

Mum-of-two Bibby, 35, of Rushmoor in Clevedon, denies causing the death of Mrs Woodier by dangerous driving, and driving whilst disqualified, in April last year.

Continuing to give evidence in her defence, Bibby said it was Mr Chappell who drove them from the pub.

She said the radio was playing loud music which she sang along to.

She told the court: "Mr Chappell said 'I can do one better than that, I can make the van dance'."

Bibby recounted how the van was travelling at no more than 25mph to 30mph.

She told the jury: "He was snaking.

"I wasn't restrained.

"I threw Mr Chappell a look.

"The next thing I knew, we're making a sharp turn to the left and, bang.

"It was an immediate sharp turn.

"I've no memory of approaching the house."

Bibby said she didn't see Mr Chappell get out of the van.

She described how she had sustained a blow to her head and she was immediately concerned about retrieving possessions from the vehicle, including her keys.

Bibby denied having a cigarette anywhere near the scene and said she had actually told a man not to switch on a light in the house due to the smell of gas.

She recalled telling an onlooker who asked her if she had been drivng: "No, I wasn't bloody driving."

She could not recall telling another person: "I can't believe Ben swerved for a cat."

The Crown says it was Bibby who was driving when the van slammed into Mrs Woodier's house in Yeolands Drive at around 35mph on April 18, 2018.

The impact caused the property's front wall to collapse and buried Mrs Woodier in rubble.

The case continues.
