Driver's heroic actions to help blind man about to be targeted by youths

A driver became so concerned that a visually impaired man was about to be mugged by a menacing group of youths that he escorted him back to his home.

Tom Walker, 55, who uses a white cane when he is out, was walking home from Edge Hill railway station when he became aware of a group of around three males behind him, close to the junction of Smithdown Road and Lodge Lane.

He said: "I was not overly alarmed by them, but it would appear according to some drivers who were nearby the youths were following me and making some threatening gestures which looked as if they were planning to jump me.

"It caused enough concern for a number of drivers to signal to each other, 'there's something not right here.'

"One of them, whose name I discovered was Carlos, actually did a U-turn on a busy road, pulled up alongside me and told me what he thought was going on.

"Thanks to his intervention, the group of young people walked off."

"The driver then followed me in his car down Lodge Lane to make sure I got home safely."

Tom is severely visually impaired as a result of congenital cataracts, which means he has two per cent vision in his right eye only.

He attended the Royal School for the Blind on Church Road North in Wavertree.

He added: "What the driver did went above and beyond anything I'd expect anyone to do.

"I'd like to thank him and anyone else who was involved for their sense of community, and for keeping an eye out for people who are in a vulnerable position."
