Driver rushed to hospital after crashing into police car on busy Ayrshire road

A driver was rushed to hospital after crashing into a police car on the A77 in Ayrshire last night.

Emergency services raced to the scene near to Prestwick Airport at around 7.30pm after reports of the incident.

A red Vauxhall Corsa is believed to have collided with a stationery cop car which was displaying blue blue lights at the time, north of the Sandyford Roundabout.

The 23-year-old driver was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where his injuries are described as non-life threatening.

The road was closed until 11.30pm.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We can confirm a road crash occurred on the A77 slightly to the north of the Sandyford Roundabout near Ayr shortly after 7.30pm on Thursday, 8 October.

"The incident involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a marked police vehicle which was stationary and displaying blue lights at the time.

"The 23-year-old male driver of the Corsa was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where his injuries are described as non-life threatening. Nobody else was injured.

"The road was closed until shortly before 11.30pm. Enquiries to establish the full circumstances remain ongoing."
