Driver runs across SIX lanes of live M61 traffic after police stop them in stolen Transit van

A driver of a stolen Transit risked their life to flee from police by running across six lanes of high-speed motorway traffic.

The van was stopped by police after officers spotted it being illegally towed by another Transit van on the M61.

But after coming to a stop, the driver of the white van that was being towed ran off across six lanes of traffic.

The incident took place near Junction 4 for Leigh and Atherton on Wednesday.

It's illegal to tow a vehicle on the motorway if it didn't break down on the motorway.

The driver of the other van was arrested on suspicion of theft after police discovered the vehicle being towed was using false number plates and had recently been stolen.

Traffic cops shared details of the incident on Twitter.

GMP Traffic wrote: "Traffic stopped a van being towed on the M61 jct4 only for the driver of the towed van to run off across 6 live lanes!!
