Driver rescued by emergency services after car enters river outside Dungiven

A man has been taken to hospital after his car entered a river in Co Derry on New Year's Day.

Police have confirmed that officers received a report of a road traffic collision which occurred at the Magheramore Road area of Dungiven on Saturday 1 st January.

At around 9:05am, it was reported that a car had struck a bridge in the area and entered the river.

One man was taken to hospital following the incident.

Posting on Facebook, the NIFRS Western Area Command confirmed it also attended the incident.

"Fire crews from Dungiven and Limavady, supported by specialist crews from Crescent Link and Central Fire Stations responded to a vehicle in water incident this morning on the outskirts of Dungiven," NIFRS said.

"The vehicle driver was rescued by the first attending crews and a subsequent systemic river search was undertaken until the PSNI confirmed that all vehicle occupants had been accounted for."

Enquiries are continuing and police have appealed to anyone with any information in relation to the incident, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 967 01/01/22.
