Driver rescued after car flips on Holy Island causeway early on New Year's Day

A driver had a lucky escape early on New Year's Day after their car flipped on the causeway at Holy Island.

The HM Coastguard was called out in the early hours of Wednesday after the car hit black ice and rolled over.

Paramedics from North East Ambulance Service also attended the scene and there was one person injured as a result of the accident but not seriously.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: "The team was called out in the early hours this morning to an RTC on the causeway .

"A car had hit black ice and over turned onto the sands.

"Multiple agencies attended the scene, the casualty was assessed by paramedics and injuries were deemed superficial."

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service confirmed they sent one ambulance to the scene and that the patient did not suffer any serious injuries.
