Driver ploughs into pole held by crossing staff on busy route to school

Drivers in Clevedon are urged to take more care after a motorist collided with a school crossing patrol.

Highways bosses are warning drivers to be careful and slow their speeds on the roads - after one collided with the pole held by a crossing patrol in Clevedon.

The member of patrol staff was stood on the pavement in Old Street when their pole - used to warn traffic to stop - was hit by a car.

Council chiefs say there have been a number of incidents in Old Street where temporary traffic barriers have been put in place to give pedestrians more space to socially distance.

Details of those spotted driving inappropriately have been handed to police.

Old Street is also a well used route to local schools including Clevedon School and St Nicholas Chantry Primary.

Incidents witnesses over the past few weeks include motorists mounting the pavement, drivers overtaking queuing traffic and people driving at inappropriate speeds.

Motorists have also collided with the barriers, which are weighted down by being filled with water.

There have also been reports of illegal parking. collisions with the barriers, which are water-filled.

North Somerset Council executive member for highways and transport, Councillor James Tonkin, said: “The temporary measures allow for safer social distancing for those travelling to and from Clevedon schools.

“It is great to see so many pedestrians using Old Street for their journeys.

"The school crossing patrol has never been busier.

"But the dangerous behaviour of a small minority of irresponsible drivers is putting lives at risk.

“On behalf of the council and of every individual who uses Old Street, I urge drivers to obey road signs and to slow down and take care if they have to use this route.

“Details of vehicles seen to be involved in incidents of dangerous driving, including those in collisions with our school crossing patrol, have been passed to the police.”

Old Street, Clevedon is part of a number of temporary schemes installed across North Somerset in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In order to make the area safer for pedestrians to wait for the school crossing patrol, and for the patrol to work within government guidance, barriers were installed near the newsagents to make more space for pedestrians.
