Driver on the run after truck leaves trail of destruction

The truck became lodged in the home overnight.

There are fears a home in Sydney's west could collapse after a flatbed truck hauling an excavator leaves a trail of destruction on the Great Western Highway, eventually becoming embedded in the walls of the house.

The truck struck a parked car, dragging it a small distance, before mounting the kerb and crashing into a house. A power pole snapped, bringing down live wires.

Police are now looking for the driver, who fled the scene soon after 12:30am on Thursday.

Inspector Kernin Lambert from Fire and Rescue NSW said it was lucky no-one was home at the time of the incident.

"[The truck] has gone right into the house, demolishing part of the walls and causing some very severe structural damage," Inspector Lambert said.

"Our crews are going to be here for quite some time during the salvage operation and we do have major concerns that this building could collapse when the truck is pulled out."

Officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command have been unable to locate the driver of the vehicle.

A crime scene has been established and inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident have commenced.
