Driver of lorry which overturned on A19 believed to have suffered medical episode, police confirm

The driver of a lorry which overturned on the A19 is believed to have suffered a medical episode, police have confirmed.

Luckily, the driver escaped with minor injuries following the collision on Thursday afternoon.

The A19 had to be closed, near to Seaham, overnight while the lorry was recovered and repairs and safety checks took place on the central reservation.

The Dulux lorry was travelling south between Seaham and Murton in County Durham when it crashed through the barrier and landed on the northbound road.

The road was closed in both directions at around 4.50pm, leaving long queues of traffic in both directions.

Police turned drivers around to get off the carriageway and onto a diversion.

On Friday, a spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to reports of a one-vehicle collision on the A19 southbound between Seaham Grange and Murton.

"The collision involved a lorry which is believed to have lost control and flipped over landing on the central reservation point.

"The driver who is believed to have suffered a medical episode, received minor injuries and the road has now reopened."
