Driver of crashed van in Cardiff and filming motorist both failed DrugWipes, say police

The driver of a black Volkswagen van that crashed into a traffic bollard in Cardiff's City Road - and another motorist who filmed the person being arrested - both failed DrugWipe tests, say South Wales Police..

South Wales Police confirmed the driver arrested was a 36-year-old man from Newport.

Officers also arrested the second person who filmed the driver being arrested.

The incident that happened at around round 3pm yesterday afternoon was recounted on the official South Wales Police Cardiff Twitter account @SWP_Roads, with an accompanying photograph of the crash scene.

It read: "Incident 520 City Road, @SWPCardiff 1 vehicle RTC. Driver failed @DrugWipeUK so #arrested.

"Whilst at scene, another driver decided to film us, so was stopped & @DrugWipeUK administered. Also a positive result - also #arrested #2for1 #Team2East ^5825 for 4835/5295."

Prior to the Coivd-19 lockdowns of 2020, there was a 20 per cent increase during 2019 in the number of prosecutions for driving while over the limit for specified controlled drug use in England and Wales, according to a Ministry of Justice report.

The drug driving prosecutions rose from 9,687 in 2018 to 11,614 in 2019, while the corresponding figures for drink-driving were 33,634 and 34,713, representing an increase of three per cent.
