The driver of a bus that crashed killing 17 people, including an Irish teacher, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

The Dublin woman was one of 17 people, out of 30 passengers, who were killed while travelling from Oman to Dubai.

The court heard that the bus struck a low-hanging barrier while traveling at a speed of 94km/h in a 40km/h zone.
The driver reportedly told the court: "I admit to my mistake but the sun was too bright. It was shining into my eyes so I pulled down a small curtain."
Dubai's Traffic Court sentenced the driver, who is from Oman, to seven years in prison and a fine of AED 3.4 million (€825,000).

However officials from Oman have said they will be appealing the conviction.
Dr Khalid bin Said bin Salim Al Jaradi, the Sultanate's Ambassador to UAE, told the Times of Oman: “We are going to appeal the verdict issued by Dubai Traffic court on Thursday against the Omani bus driver.
"The embassy is following up the case.”
