Driver named as police officer injured in car chase

Police have charged a 26-year-old man after a car chase lead to two officers and a passenger being injured.

Ben Duffy, from Wigan Road in Leigh, allegedly drove a black Ford Kuga the wrong way up the M57 in an attempt to escape police patrols on Knowsley Lane.

The car, which was reportedly stolen and travelling at high speeds, was brought to a stop by officers at a roundabout near junction 2 of the motorway, at around 9pm, on Sunday, October 24.

Both Duffy and the driver of a police vehicle were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the stop.

Another police officer and a woman passenger in the Kuga suffered injuries during the stop.

Officers searched the vehicle, recovered suspected drugs and a weapon.

Detectives have confirmed Duffy has now been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to provide a specimen for analysis and receiving stolen goods.

The 24-year-old passenger in the car has now been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Duffy was remanded in custody and appeared in Wirral Adult Remand Court this morning (Tuesday, October 26).
