Driver nabbed with £43k of heroin when cops stopped his car

A driver was caught with heroin worth £43,000 when his car was stopped in Bellshill.

Police had followed Christopher Docherty’s movements after seeing him acting suspiciously in Glasgow.

Docherty, 44, of Montrose Avenue, Carmyle, Glasgow, admitted being concerned in the supply of heroin on May 22 last year.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard officers in an unmarked car thought he was acting suspiciously when he entered a common close in Carmyle Avenue about 8.15pm.

Wendy McAdam, prosecuting, said:  “A short time later he came out carrying a blue plastic carrier bag that appeared to be heavy.

“He went into a car and drove off. The plain clothes officers alerted colleagues who stopped the vehicle on the A725 near Bellshill.

“When they spoke to the accused, who had been driving, he appeared extremely nervous and kept looking towards the vehicle.

“Officers recovered the blue bag which contained two blocks of brown powder, each weighing half a kilo.

“This turned out to be diamorphine which, if divided into 1g deals, would yield £43,000.

“Docherty was interviewed and made no comment.”

Sheriff Mhairi Mactaggart called for a criminal justice social work report and deferred sentence.

Docherty had his bail continued.
