Driver miraculously escapes injury after lorry leaves road and gardai rush to scene

A motorist had a lucky escape on Wednesday after a terrifying incident on a busy Irish road.

The driver was travelling in a lorry on Wednesday morning when the vehicle left the road and ended up in the ditch.

The incident happened on the R400 between Rhode in Co Offaly and Rochfortbridge in Co Westmeath.

Gardai and emergency services including the local fire brigade rushed to the scene.

No one was injured in the crash and there were no other vehicles involved.

Gardai closed the road for a time but it reopened a few hours later.

The Laois/Offaly division said in a statement: "Edenderry Gardai dealing with a single road traffic accident on the R400 between Rhode and Rochfortbridge. No Injuries.

"Road will be closed please avoid."

In a subsequent update a few hours later, gardai informed the public that the road had reopened.

It comes as a man was left fighting for his life after a crash between a car and a HGV truck on Wednesday.

The two-vehicle collision happened on the N5 on the stretch of road between Charlestown and Swinford at around 12.25am.

A man in his 70s, who was a passenger in the car, was brought to Mayo University Hospital. in a critical condition.

Another occupant of the car, a woman in her 50s, was also seriously injured and to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

The driver of the car was also rushed to Mayo University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact them.
