Driver makes off from scene of crash as car bursts into flames

A driver made off from the scene of a crash in the early hours as the car burst into flames.

Police out on patrol discovered a car in Leigh which had been left abandoned after crashing into a metal fence.

The car, found in Manchester Road in the early hours of Thursday morning, was badly damaged in the collision with its front end smashed up.

The car burst into flames as a result of the crash.

But no driver was to be seen - the doors left open after the driver had escaped the wreckage.

The mystery driver is believed to have made off just 'seconds before' an officer was on the scene, according to the police.

Police have launched enquiries into the incident that are ongoing.

In a tweet, Greater Manchester Traffic Police said: #XT11 came across this vehicle on Manchester Road Leigh in the early hours of this morning.

"Driver had made off seconds before the officer arrived. Fire caused by collision. Enquiries on going.
