Driver left trapped inside Land Rover after major crash with London fire engine

Five people, including four firefighters, have been taken to hospital after a crash involving a Land Rover and a fire engine in south London which left one person trapped.

The driver of the 4x4 had to be cut out by firefighters following the collision on Streatham High Road in the early hours of Monday with the car having been left "demolished" according to a witness.

It is understood all four firefighters who were inside the engine were taken to hospital.

The fire engine was on a blue light call at the time of the incident at around 1.25am, with the front of the emergency vehicle left 'mangled'.

According to reports, the crew was from Norbury Fire Station and was responding to a fire at a shop on the same road as the crash.

The fire was reportedly quickly brought under control and there were no reports of any injuries.

Photos from the scene show a police cordon, while the roof has been removed from the car.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "A fire engine was involved in a road traffic collision with a car on Streatham High Road on Monday 29 June.

"The driver of the car was trapped by their injuries and was released by additional Brigade crews.

"They were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

"The fire engine was responding to an emergency call at the time of the collision and another fire engine was mobilised."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.25am this morning (June 29) to reports of a road traffic collision involving a London Fire Brigade vehicle on Streatham High Road at the junction of Greyhound Lane, Streatham.

"We sent five ambulance crews, a medic in a car, an incident response officer and our hazardous area response team (HART) to the scene.

"We treated six people at the scene and took five to hospital."

Chris Mayo tweeted about hearing a "large bang" in Streatham and posted a brief video of a fire engine with flashing blue lights.

Fire engine smashed up and a car next to it. Loads of police & fire engines on the scene now. Unsure if it’s a crash or an explosion. Road currently being blocked off.

Writing on Twitter at around 1.30am, another person said: "Huge bang and can see blue lights at the bottom of the Common, saw two fire trucks racing down Streatham Common North Rd about ten mins ago."
