Driver left fighting for life after Mini Cooper hit hedge during dreadful weather conditions

A man has been left with life-threatening injuries after his car crashed into a hedge during Friday morning's "challenging" weather.

The accident happened at 2.55am on Hollybush Way in Ty Coch, Cwmbran on Friday when a Mini Cooper crashed into a hedge at a nearby house.

The driver was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and his injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The road remains closed in both directions from Ty Coch Way to Two Locks Road while investigation work continues.

Jennie Griffiths from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Cwmbran and Malpas crews attended RTC [road traffic collision].

"Vehicle left road [and went into a] in hedge in Ty Coch at 2.59am.

"The casualty was extricated by fire crews and treated at the scene by ambulance crews."

The weather was particularly bad for the time of year in the early hours of Friday as heavy rain and strong winds moved in from the west.

The Met Office said the weather is likely to bring "challenging conditions" as Wales is hit with a triple weather warning.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "There is an ongoing investigation so [we] wouldn’t be able to speculate on the causes."
