The matter remains under investigation. People living nearby took to social media to warn residents to avoid the area as it had been cordoned off.

One Maerdy resident told WalesOnline: "I heard a bang, it must have been around 8.30pm. I looked out and saw the blue car and assumed someone had just bumped into it! It wasn't till I went up to close the bedroom curtains I saw the extent of the crash!

"Plenty of fire brigade on scene by then, I posted on the group [a local community group on social media] to let people know that part of the road was closed."

Photos from the incident show several damaged cars in the road, while fire crews appear to be assessing the damage and ensuring the cars are safe.

South Wales Police has confirmed there have been no reports of injuries.
