Driver leads police in pursuit despite losing wheel in crash

A driver led officers on a pursuit in a car with three wheels, after it lost one in a crash when running a red light, police say.

Police said a person was injured in the crash in Gungahlin on Sunday night.

They said they first tried to pull over a white Toyota Seca sedan on Amagula Avenue about 10.15pm. The driver fled along Wanganeen Avenue.

The car was seen later heading north on Gundaroo Drive, and ran a red light at the intersection with Mirrabei Drive, where it crashed into a white Kia Rio hatchback.

"The offender failed to stop at the scene of the collision and drove off along Gundaroo Drive towards Horse Park Drive. The driver of the Kia suffered minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene," police said in a statement.

"The vehicle was located by police on Horse Park Drive in Taylor and officers initiated a pursuit at low speed due to the vehicle having lost a wheel in the collision."

Police followed the car for four minutes through Ngunnawal and Gungahlin before the driver stopped the car on a median strip on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston and ran away.

They ask anyone who either saw the crash or subsequent pursuit or who have CCTV and dash-cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or at the Crime Stoppers ACT website and quote reference 6684060.
