Driver killed after horror crash with van was 71 years old

A man who was killed in a tragic horror crash in Wirral has been identified by police.

Emergency services were called to Fender Lane in Prenton at around 9am on Sunday morning to reports of a crash between a BMW and a Volkswagon van.

The BMW driver was rescued from the crash and taken to hospital with serious injuries but police confirmed later that he had died in hospital.

A driver and passenger who were travelling in the panelled van were not injured in the crash.

On Monday, police released details of the man killed in the collision and announced that his family had been informed.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police can today confirm that a 71-year-old man from Moreton tragically passed away following a road traffic collision on Fender Lane on June 2.

"The man has now been formally identified and his family have asked for the media and the public to respect their privacy at this difficult time.

"Anyone with any information, or dashcam footage of the incident, is asked to contact @MerPolCC, quoting reference: 19100283478, or the Roads Policing team directly on 0151 777 5747."

A post mortem examination will now be carried out to establish the man's cause of death.
