Driver in 'stolen' car filmed racing along train tracks as two officers injured

A 4x4 was driven on railway tracks today after a failed police stop left two officers injured.

The "stolen" Land Rover tore up the Cheshunt Rail Station line after the driver allegedly failed to stop for the police.

Witnesses compared the drama in the Hertfordshire town to Grand Theft Auto.

Multiple cars were left damaged in the incident on Thursday morning, which saw the driver reverse the 4x4 away from police at speed, smashing up vehicles as they went.

Officers had stopped the vehicle to speak the driver, following report of a stolen Land Rover.

The motorist inside the car then drove off up the train tracks between Cheshunt and Waltham Cross stations, according to Hertfordshire Live.

Footage of the incident shows the car's door open as police officers tussle with the driver inside.

"Get out of the car," one officers shouts.

The car then reverses off with police hanging onto it and the door swinging open, smashing into multiple vehicles as it goes.

It then brakes and speeds off in the opposite direction, accelerating toward the tracks.

Another video shows stunned onlookers on Cheshunt station's platform watching as the 4x4 races noisily up the West Anglia main line.

Yiannis Cove posted the video showing the moment the car raced onto the tracks.

He tweeted: "GTA 6 looks so realistic."

The incident caused travel chaos, with Cheshunt station closed by police and no trains running on the line.

Police said the driver still hadn't been found by mid-afternoon. They fled at around 9.30am then dumped the vehicle.

Herfordshire Police stopped the 4x4 after a stolen vehicle had been reported travelling from Essex to Cheshunt.

It was located near the station and officers attempted to speak to the driver, police added.

A spokesperson for the force has said: "The vehicle made off, injuring two officers and damaging several vehicles in the process.

"Officers from Hertfordshire also attended to assist with the search and the vehicle was found abandoned on nearby train tracks, in Windmill Lane.

"A search of the area is currently being carried out to locate the driver and officers are working alongside British Transport Police to recover the vehicle. It was not struck by a train at any point.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the vehicle driving in the area, is asked to contact police on 101."

Services were severely disrupted as a result of the incident and the station being closed.

Commuters in Herts, Essex, Cambridge and London have been affected by the trains being cancelled.

Herts Police added that the vehicle had been recovered from the tracks by mid-afternoon.

A force spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing to trace the driver.

"The two officers involved have thankfully only received minor physical injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

"They are being supported at this time. No one else is reported to have been injured."
