Driver in miracle escape after tree collapses onto van in Scots town

This is the terrifying moment a tree collapsed onto a van in East Renfrewshire sparking a huge emergency response.

Motorists were stopped in their tracks on Eastwood Mains Road in the Williamwood area just after 8pm on Tuesday.

Images show police officers on the scene in front of the vehicle which has been trapped.

The tree appears to have fallen onto the front bonnet of the car, narrowly missing its windscreen.

The incident happened amid strong winds and torrential rain that battered parts of the central belt.

Officers closed the road to drivers to attend and contacted East Renfrewshire Council.

Council workers removed the tree almost four hours after police were called, just before 12am.

Police told the Record that nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

A spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a tree having fallen across Eastwood Mains Road in Clarkston around 8.15pm on Tuesday, March 9.

"The tree struck a van but no one was injured.

"The local authority was contacted to remove the tree which was completed shortly before 12am."
