Driver in hospital after car ploughs through phone exchange box after 'medical episode' at the wheel

The driver of a car involved in a serious crash in Prestiwch had suffered from a 'medical episode' police say.

Emergency crews were called when a black VW Golf came off the road and smashed through a telephone exchange box at around 1pm yesterday.

The crash happened on Bury Old Road, close to the junction with Polefield Approach.

The driver involved in the crash was taken to hospital.

Recovery crews had to have the power switched off so that they could remove the heavily damaged car from the scene.

In a post on Twitter, a spokesman for GMP's Traffic Unit shared images of the shocking crash.

The power had to be turned off before the car could be moved. (GMP)

They said: "Driver of this VW Golf had a medical episode at the wheel and mounted a telephone exchange on Bury Old Road, Prestwich yesterday.

"Driver went to hospital by ambulance.

"Vehicle eventually recovered after electrics switched off."
