A 23-year-old man accused of causing a deadly crash while drunk driving on the West Side last week allegedly told a witness that he was “done” and “going to jail.”
Maliq Bent ran a red light, barreling through the intersection of Damen Avenue and Augusta Boulevard at more than 75 mph before T-boning Louis Uddin’s vehicle, Cook County prosecutors said Monday.
The impact of the early morning Dec. 15 crash caused Uddin’s car to spin out of control, striking a parked car before it stopped, Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy said.
After the crash, Bent said he was “done” and “going to jail” to a witness who saw him run the red light and strike Uddin, Murphy said.
Uddin, 33, was responsive after the crash, although he became unresponsive as emergency medical personnel tended to him on the scene. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Murphy said.
Bent also was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he remained Monday after having surgery to repair a broken pelvis, Murphy said. Bent, whose driver’s license has been suspended since 2018, consented to a DUI kit at the hospital. His blood-alcohol level came back at .130, which is over the legal limit of 0.08, Murphy said.
Bent was ordered held on $250,000 bail for aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide.
He’s expected back in court Dec. 28.
