Driver in custody after fatal Waukegan crash

A man was arrested after a crash that killed his passenger July 4, 2019, in north suburban Waukegan.

A driver was arrested after a crash that killed his passenger Thursday in north suburban Waukegan.

He was driving a black 2008 Ford Fusion east on Bonnie Brook Lane about 10:45 p.m. when he lost control and hit a tree near the intersection with Lewis Avenue, according to a statement from Waukegan police.

The front-seat passenger, a North Chicago man in his 20s, was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, police said. The Lake County coroner’s office is expected to perform an autopsy on Friday.

The driver, a Highland Park man in his 20s, was taken to a hospital to be treated for “moderate injuries,” police said. He has since been released into police custody.

Investigators think speeding and alcohol contributed to the crash, police said. The Lake County state’s attorney’s office is reviewing the case to determine whether charges will be filed.

Police said both men were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
