Driver in custody after fatal hit-and-run in Launceston

Police investigations are underway at the scene of the fatal hit-and-run in Launceston.

A man is dead and another is in police custody after a hit-and-run in the Launceston suburb of Prospect Vale.

Police allege a black dual cab Ford Ranger, with a fibreglass rear canopy, left the scene of the crash on the corner of Knox and Burrows streets in Prospect Vale about 11:00am today.

Senior Sergeant Nick Clark said local residents alerted police.

"When police arrived, a male person was found deceased at the scene," he said.

Senior Sergeant Clark said a man in his thirties was taken into custody in Trevallyn, about 5 kilometres away.

"The alleged offender is being spoken to at police headquarters in Launceston," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Launceston Police or Crime Stoppers.
