Driver in custody after dramatic police chase in Portishead

A person is in custody after a dramatic police chase in Portishead ended in a crash.

Photographs from the collision scene show the back of a police car and the front of the offender's vehicle completely smashed.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police's road safety team said the motorist had been disqualified from driving last week.

Officer then spotted the vehicle in Portishead on Friday night (August 14). The driver, who had just committed a theft, sped off when approached by police.

A chase ensued before both cars collided.

The motorist was arrested for dangerous driving, theft and driving while disqualified.

A force spokesperson said: "This vehicle was stopped by us last week.

"The driver was disqualified and we used ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) to tell others about it.

"Last night (Friday) it was sighted in Portishead and made off from officers.

"The driver drove dangerously, had just committed a theft and was disqualified. One in custody."
