Driver in crash that killed 19yo pedestrian when passenger pulled car's handbrake denied bail

Libby Ruge was on a night out with friends when she was struck by the car.

The 18-year-old driver of a car that ploughed into a group of pedestrians outside a Wollongong club on Saturday night has been denied bail.

The driver, Jaskaran Singh, faced Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday charged with multiple dangerous driving offences a day after co-accused Arpan Sharma, 21, was granted bail.

Nineteen-year-old Libby Ruge was killed and two of her friends seriously injured when they were hit by a Toyota Camry outside Wollongong's Collegians Rugby Leagues Club.

Mr Singh's lawyer, Patrick Schmidt, told the court his client and Mr Sharma met while working as night cleaners and were at a party earlier in the evening.

The court heard Mr Sharma had been drinking while Mr Singh was sober and offered to drive home.

Mr Schmidt told the court an intoxicated Mr Sharma pulled the handbrake while the car was outside the club and the driver attempted to regain control of the vehicle, but was unable to.

The court heard the 18-year-old was in shock after the accident and walked 20 metres away from the crash where he curled up into the foetal position.

Mr Schmidt told the court his client later turned himself into police.

Police allege that despite Mr Sharma pulling the handbrake, Mr Singh was behind the wheel so he was in control of the vehicle.

Police told the court the defendant is facing up to 10 years in prison, and based on CCTV evidence and witness testimony there was a high chance of a custodial sentence.

In denying his bail application, Magistrate Susan McGowan pointed to Mr Singh's lack of community ties and the high risk he would fail to reappear at court.

The matter will return to court in January.

A fundraiser set up online to pay for Ms Ruge's funeral has already raised more than $35,000.

Police are continuing their investigations into the crash and have urged anybody with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
