Driver in car filled with bags of cannabis jumps into river to escape police

A driver who had bags of cannabis in his car led police on a 30-minute chase before crashing and then jumping into a river to escape.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said the driver had been spotted in a stolen Vauxhall Insignia with cloned number plates.

He failed to stop, and then drove dangerously as he was followed by police all the way from Junction 28 of the M1 down to the A444 at Nuneaton.

He then crashed - but managed to escape.

Tweeting about the incident this morning, police said that the car was "loaded up" with cannabis.

The incident happened at 4.38 this morning, Tuesday September 17.
