Driver hits police car 'while searching on phone for Saved by the Bell episode'

Kevin Bacon ( Vermont State Police )

A driver in the US state of Vermont was arrested after he hit a police car while allegedly looking for an episode of Saved by the Bell on his phone.

Kevin Bacon, 55, was searching for a specific instalment of the 1990s teen sitcom when he struck the rear of a patrol car parked on the hard shoulder of the interstate, according to a Vermont State Police report.

The driver had been trying to find a fifth season Saved by the Bell episode called “Screech’s Spaghetti Sauce” at the time of the 13 June crash, officials said.

Mr Bacon drove on for another mile, but was finally pulled over after police officer Stuart Rogers pursed him along the I-91 in the Thetford area.

He was arrested for gross negligent operation of a vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash and was also cited for texting while driving.

A police investigation said the driver had been looking down at his phone at the time of the crash, as well as several minutes beforehand.

He failed to see the marked police cruiser – despite its emergency lights flashing – or a separate vehicle the police officer had pulled over to help, the report said.

“Neither Bacon nor officer Rogers were injured as a result of this crash,” said Vermont State Police. “Damage to both vehicles was minor.”

He is scheduled to appear in court at the end of July.
