Driver hit pensioner in the street - then made off without handing over details

A pensioner was seriously injured after a car ploughed into him as he got into his own vehicle.

The victim, a man in his 70s, was struck as he was getting into his car on Gladstone Street in St Helens .

Merseyside Police has now launched a witness appeal after the driver whose vehicle hit the man stopped initially but left the scene without handing over details.

The victim suffered what police termed "a serious ankle injury" in the incident which happened around 6.30pm on Friday, April 5.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Officers are keen to speak to the driver, or anyone who witnessed the incident, and would ask anyone with information to get in touch.

Roads Policing Sergeant, Amy Murray said: “We know the driver of the vehicle, believed to be an elderly male, did initially stop however we are keen to trace him as he could assist us with our enquiries.

“Thankfully, the victim is now recovering and we would ask anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to please get in touch."
