Driver has 'heart attack' at the wheel and crashes into cars near school

A driver of a van is reported to have suffered a heart attack at the wheel and crashed into cars outside a school.

Emergency services raced to Browns Lane in Netherton at 3pm yesterday after reports a van had crashed into parked cars.

Police said the driver of the van, a man in his 50s, is believed to have suffered a "medical episode" at the wheel and was taken to hospital.

A parked Volkswagen Transporter, a Fiat Punto and Vauxhall Insignia were damaged during the crash.

People posted on Facebook that Brown's Lane and Copy Lane in Netherton had been closed off by police as they dealt with the emergency.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man "slumped" in a van and several others saw paramedics with defibrillators at the scene.

One person posted: "A van hit two cars outside our school - someone said the driver had a heart attack."

Another person replied saying they knew the driver of the van and he had suffered "multiple heart attacks".

Merseyside Police have said the man remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called at 3pm yesterday, Tuesday June 15, following reports a van had been in collision with parked vehicles on Browns Lane in Netherton.

"The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, is believed to have suffered a medical episode and was taken to hospital.

"A parked Volkswagen Transporter, a Fiat Punto and Vauxhall Insignia were damaged during the collision.

"The man is in a stable condition in hospital."
