Driver going over 200km/h leads gardai on lengthy chase through Co Tipperary

A driver led gardai on a chase for over 65km at a speed of more than 200km/h in Co Tipperary last week.

Gardai saw the motorists doing 183km/h on the M7 at Birdhill last Wednesday at around 9:30pm.

The officers from Thurles pursued the vehicle who sped up even more while bombing it north along the busy motorway.

Gardai from Laois helped in the operation and the man, aged in his late teens, was stopped in Borris.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have arrested a man following a 65km managed pursuit on Wednesday.

"At around 9.30pm Gardaí from the Thurles Roads Policing Unit were operating a speed checkpoint on the M7 at Birdhill when they detected a car travelling at 183km/hr.

"A managed pursuit from a safe distance ensued with the offending car increasing its speed to over 210km/hr at times. Gardaí witnesses numerous instances of dangerous driving in wet conditions.

"Assistance was requested by Gardaí in Laois but before they arrived, the car stopped in Borris In Ossory; some 65km away from where it was initially detected.

"The driver, a man aged in his late teens, was arrested and charged."
