The silver Toyota can be seen slowly reversing down the hard shoulder, alongside massive standstill queues in all other lanes of the carriageway.

David Carlyon, who filmed the incident, said: "Some drivers make sick. Stuck in traffic on the M6/M62 slip road due to an accident and p***** won't wait and endanger other drivers by trying to get back on the M6."

Part of the motorway between junction 9 and junction 8 has been closed since 7am while North West Motorway Police lead the response to an incident described as 'serious'.

Drivers have been urged by police to find an alternative route if possible.

National Highways said the carriageway will remain closed for 'several hours' as North West Motorway Police's investigation takes place.
