Driver forced to climb on car roof after driving into Nailsea flood water

A hapless driver had to be rescued from the roof of their car after ignoring road closure sign as Storm Alex battered the West Country.

The red-faced driver was forced to dial 999 after driving into floodwater at Backwell in Nailsea on Friday night despite the warning signs saying the road was closed.

As the water started flooding into the vehicle they were advised to climb out and onto the roof.

A fire crew from Nailsea and the specialist swift water and flood rescue technician from Bedminster station were deployed but by the time they arrived another motorist had stepped in to do the honours.

Bedminster Fire crews tweeted about the incident to warn motorists not to ignore the warning signs during the torrential dowpours over the weekend when parts of nearby Somerset had a month's worth of rain in a few days.

They posted pictures of a car and a boat and then a rescue saying: "This is what happens when you mistake the two. Turn around, don't drown."

A spokesman said: "The incident was located at notorious spot in Backwell where we often rescue individuals from their cars.

"On this occasion, the driver ignored the Road Closed signs and proceeded only to get stranded in the water.

"A 999 call was made and the driver was advised to climb out of the cab and onto the vehicle roof. He was rescued by another motorist before the on call fire crew from Nailsea arrived.

"The specialist swiftwater and flood rescue technician from Bedminster station also attended the incident.

They tweeted an image of the signs with the message: "They are there to protect you, do not ignore them".

They tweeted: Water specialists from Red Watch responded with Nailsea to a car stuck in flood water last night. Luckily the occupants were rescued before our arrival.

"Do not enter flood water and while at it, do not ignore the flood warning signs."
