RIO DE JANEIRO ― A Nicaraguan man working as a driver for the Japanese Embassy in Nicaragua died on Wednesday from inflammation after showing symptoms of the novel coronavirus, according to the embassy.
On April 29, the man complained of a headache and an uncomfortable feeling in his throat and checked into a hospital in the capital city of Managua on May 3. He suffered from chronic diabetes. A coronavirus test could not be performed, but the embassy indicated that "the likelihood of a [coronavirus] infection is high."
As of Thursday, none of the roughly 30 Japanese and local embassy employees had complained of feeling unwell, but those who were in close contact with the man are currently under home quarantine.
In Nicaragua, the regime of President Daniel Ortega is disregarding infection prevention measures. Institutions including schools and stores have not taken shutdown measures, and sports events, such as soccer matches, are continuing to be held.
